The Best Time to Water Your Lawn in Tampa's Summer Heat

Watering your lawn sounds simple, but timing makes a bigger difference than most homeowners realize — especially during Florida's hot, humid summer months. Get it right and your grass stays green and healthy. Get it wrong and you're inviting fungal disease, wasted water, or a stressed lawn that struggles through the heat.

The best window for watering is early morning, before 10 AM. At that hour, temperatures are cooler, wind is usually calm, and your lawn has time to absorb moisture before the heat of the day drives evaporation. Watering in the evening leaves the grass wet overnight — the prime condition for lawn fungus to spread.

Here's something that works in your favor in August: Florida's afternoon thunderstorms handle a lot of the watering for you. If storms are in the forecast, skip your irrigation cycle for that day. Overwatering is just as harmful as underwatering, and it's one of the most common mistakes in Hillsborough County lawns during rainy season.

For St. Augustine grass — the most common type in our area — aim for about three-quarter inch of water per session, two to three times a week, adjusting down when rain fills in. Bahia grass is more drought-tolerant and needs even less. Signs of overwatering include yellowing grass, mushrooms, and a spongy feel underfoot.
