When and How to Fertilize Your Florida Lawn This Summer — Tips from AK Precision Cuts
Florida lawns need the right fuel at the right time — and summer is when most homeowners get it wrong. Too much fertilizer in peak heat can burn your turf. Too little and your grass loses the strength it needs to fight off weeds and fungus. Here is what you need to know for Hillsborough County this July.
Know Your Grass Type
The three most common lawn grasses in the Tampa Bay area each have different summer fertilization needs:
St. Augustine grass thrives with a slow-release, nitrogen-rich fertilizer applied every 6 to 8 weeks during the growing season. Avoid high-phosphorus blends — your Florida soil already has plenty.
Bahia grass is more drought-tolerant and less demanding. A balanced 16-4-8 or similar slow-release blend every 8 to 10 weeks keeps it healthy without pushing excessive growth.
Zoysia grass grows slowly and requires less nitrogen than St. Augustine. Over-fertilizing Zoysia in summer leads to thatch buildup and disease — a light feeding every 8 weeks is the right call.
The Nutrients That Matter Most
In summer, nitrogen drives green color and growth, but potassium is equally important — it strengthens cell walls and helps grass withstand heat stress and heavy afternoon rain. Look for a fertilizer with a high third number (potassium) for Florida's rainy season conditions. Iron supplements can restore deep green color without pushing excess blade growth during the hottest weeks.
When NOT to Fertilize
Hillsborough County follows fertilizer blackout restrictions from June 1 through September 30 for nitrogen and phosphorus. This applies to all unincorporated county areas. Applying restricted fertilizer during a blackout period is not just bad for your lawn — it carries fines. Always use a slow-release or approved summer-formula product and follow the label.
